Ever wondered what else you could do with crochet besides scarves, sweaters, hats, and bags? We found a great new use for your crochet skills – creating picture frames to house either your other projects (such as embroidery and cross stitch) or photos of your loved ones. These frames come in all shapes and sizes and are eminently customizable. All you need to do is find yarn and an appropriate crochet hook and you can crochet as big a frame as your heart desires, with any sort of material from wire to hemp to cord to yarn to t-shirts.
Tons of photo inspiration can be found online, but we found a free crochet pattern that is simple enough for any crocheter at any level. The end result is a beautiful, ornate photo frame that can house anything from a childhood piece of artwork to earrings. You can make this frame by gathering up the following materials:
- Worsted weight yarn (or whatever yarn/material you will be using)
- A 4mm-5mm crochet hook (or appropriate size for whatever other material you are working with)
- A pair of scissors
- A tapestry needle
- Notions to decorate if so desired – buttons, sequins, lace, ribbon, glitter/fabric paint, etc.
- A photo or piece of artwork you wish to display in said frame (will need to check every so often that the frame will fit it). You can also use something in the shape of a frame, such as a coffee canister, a glass, or an embroidery hoop
You’ll also need to be familiar with the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch)
- Slip stitch (sl st)
- Single crochet (sc)
Begin by wrapping the yarn around the framing tool you’re using, and then you’ll start the actual crocheting part. Even if the frame is a larger size, it shouldn’t take long to complete this project, and then you’ll be able to display your photos in art that you created.
