Have you ever wanted to try crocheting an afghan but felt too intimidated by the size of the project? What if you could tailor an afghan to just the right size for a lap blanket, baby blanket, or couch cover? You could gradually work your way up to a regular size blanket one small piece at a time. Sound good? Then this Happy Hexagons Crochet Afghan pattern is for you.
Make & Do Crew’s Happy Hexagons Afghan pattern is comprised of (you guessed it) multiple hexagons and provides the crocheter with plenty of options such as size and color. You can make an afghan all one color, or as an ombre, or with coordinating or contrasting colors. You can make small, medium, or large size blankets, depending on your comfort level, and they’ll all turn out beautiful.
To make the Happy Hexagon Afghan, you’ll need the following materials:
- cotton yarn (recommended: “I Love This Cotton”) – in whatever color(s) you choose. One skein equals about seven hexagons, so plan accordingly.
- Size “H” hook (5mm)
- Scissors
- Embroidery needle
- Blocking board (if you don’t already have one there’s a link to a tutorial for one you can make)
- Spray bottle with water (for blocking)
While you will have to block each hexagon, the upside is that by doing this you will be making each of them the same size so that they are easier to join together, instead of having to put extra stitches or fewer stitches here and there fore the ones that aren’t quite the same size. You’ll also be using an invisible seam to join the hexagons together. The border of the afghan is simply single crochet.
You’ll also need to know the following stitches: chain (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), and double crochet (dc). These stitches are all simple which makes this a fantastic project for a beginner who wants to take on something a little more challenging without having to learn several new stitches. It could even become a teaching project for a beginner and a more seasoned crocheter, as both of them will be able to complete hexagons, therefore shortening the time in which the blanket is made.
The great thing about this pattern is that you’ll never have to carry around a massive blanket. If you want to take this project on the road, or to games, or to a friend’s house for a craft night, all you need is a small bag to hold your crochet hook and a few hexagons. They’ll even fit in your purse. You can stuff a few pieces, a skein of yarn, and a crochet hook in the bag and be ready to go anywhere, even if it’s in the car for a day trip.
